Rugby World Cup 2007 has suddenly taken an interesting turn and like all true arm chair fans have something to talk about. But for the record, I'm gutted that the All Blacks lost to the Frogs. I love the way the All Blacks play - they are usually open, agressive, ruthless and magical to watch and most importantly - there is the Hakka, a war dance that inspires the team - when performed it evokes a sense of manly pride to watch the All Blacks declare war on their oponents at the opening of every match.
Having said that, the Frogs were the better team on the day. As with football, the French have a way of pulling out something from the bag when you least expect them to do it. The world's best teams somehow get stuck when they play the French - look at last years Football World Cup - the French were boring and pedantic and then when they played Brazil in the quarte finals, they made magic. Likewise with the All Blacks in Rugby - usually the Blacks beat the stuffing out of them but suddenly in the World Cup semis in 99 or this year in the quarters - something amazing happens. - You have to hand it to the French - they are magicians on the sports field.
Anyway, the point is, this Rugby World Cup has become interesting. Traditional Power houses Australia and the All Blacks are out - a bit like Football without BRazil and Argentina. Rugby was actually more predictable than football in the sense that it was always easier to predict the semis.
But now....things have become different thanks to .....Argentina. While everyone knows the Argentinians for their football skills....rugby is something different. But suddenly...they beat the Frogs in the opening and we thought it was fluke....but now, they're in the semis having beaten Scotland in the quarters. For once, the Rugby World Cup has an outsider - a non Tri or Six Nations member.
Rugby is suddenly...unpredictable! There's drama....And this can only be good for the sport, when you have an element of unpredictability.
Like life, predictability makes something boring and stale. Kiwis are going on about how they are just part of the pack and no longer top dog - a national tragedy in Kiwi Lang. - Well, na, actually, the rest of the world -as shown by Argentinia have caught up and making their mark on the sport - and this can only be good in the long run.
Viva Argentinia and as Green Day say, "It's something unpredictable but in the end its something right, I hope you have the time of your life."
